Partial map of the province of Burgos (1784)

This map was created by Spanish cartographer Tomás López de Vargas Machuca in 1784 and published posthumously by his sons in the “Geographical Atlas of Spain” from 1804. The map depicts the central and southern parts of the Province of Burgos with the territorial boundaries prior to the provincial administrative reform carried out by Javier de Burgos in 1833.

The province of Burgos was much larger than this map shows, being one of the most extensive provinces of the old regime. As the author indicates at the bottom of the text on the left, the following areas are not included on this map: the Santo Domingo District and the Logroño District, as well as the Party of the Staff of Laredo and the Province of Liébana.

This copy shows the complex territorial organisation of the province and its administrative subdivision:

  • The Municipalities of Burgos, Bureva, Castroxeriz, Candemuño, Villadiego, Juarros and Aranda
  • The Sedano, Valdelaguna and Bezana Valleys
  • The Jurisdiction of Lara.
  • The Gorges of Bricia and Arreba.

The province extends north and northeast. It borders the province of Soria and the province of Segovia, as well as to the west with the province of Palencia and the province of Valladolid.
