This map, created by Reddit user Bezbojnicul, shows how to say 'orange' in the different languages spoken in Europe. The colour code groups the different roots, four of which stand out:

  • Yellow: Orange in Spanish, Orange in French, and Arancia in Italian, among other Western European countries.
  • Dark yellow: Pomarańcza in Polish and Pomaranč in Czech, among other Slavic countries (a root linked to the previous one).
  • Green: Portokáli in Greek and Portocál in Bulgarian, among other countries in the Balkans and the Middle East.
  • Purple: Apel’sín in Russian and Apelsin in Swedish, among other Slavic and Nordic countries.

German stands out for having words with two different roots, which is why it appears in yellow with purple dots.
