Linguistic map of the potato (2024)

This map, published by Mapologies in 2024, shows how to say potato in the different languages spoken in Europe.

Using a colour code, the author groups the different roots. The main ones are as follows:

  • Rosa, from the Taíno sweet potato, through Spanish potato.
  • Light green, from Latin tuber, through Vulgar Latin truffle and German potato.
  • Dark green, from Latin bulb, through Polish bulwa.
  • Purple, from the historic region of Brandenburg.
  • Orange, from Bavaria grumper or Swedish pear.
