Linguistic map of cheese in Europe (2013)

This map, published by Reddit user Coedwig in 2013, shows how to say cheese in the different languages spoken in Europe. The colour code groups together the different roots, four of which stand out:

  • Blue, from Latin caesus: Portuguese, Spanish, Sardinian, Romance, German, Dutch, Breton, English, Cornish, Welsh, Gaelic, Irish, and Manx.
  • Yellow, from Proto-Balto-Slavic: Russian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Belarusian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian, Bosnian, Croatian, and Slovenian.
  • Reddish, from Latin formaticum: French, Occitan, Catalan, Romance and Italian.
  • Green, from Proto-Germanic: Icelandic, Faroese, Norwegian, Finnish, Estonian, Danish and Swedish.

In addition, the map includes other colours to indicate other, less widespread origins of the term 'cheese':

  • Pistachio green, from Proto-Basque: Basque.
  • Turquoise blue, from Proto-Albanian: Albanian.
  • Purple, from Ancient Greek: Greek.
  • Orange, unknown, although possibly from Latin or Dacian: Romanian.
  • Rosa, from the Iranian languages: Hungarian/Magyar.
  • Black, of Semitic origin: Maltese.
