This map, created by Reddit user T-Other1, shows how to say 'beer' in the different languages spoken in Europe. The colour coding groups the different roots, four of which stand out:
- Orange: Beer in Spanish and same root as in other languages of the Iberian Peninsula.
- Light brown: Beer in English, Bière in French, and Birra in Italian, among other countries in Western and Southern Europe.
- Dark brown: Öl in Swedish, Ale in English, and the same root in the rest of the Nordic and Baltic countries.
- Yellow: Pivo in Russian and other Slavic languages.
Languages with a singular root appear in black, as is the case with the usual suspects in linguistic comparisons: Basque, Hungarian, Armenian, and Georgian.
