Linguistic map of beer in Europe (2013)

This map, created by Reddit user Bezbojnicul in 2013, shows how to say beer in the different languages spoken in Europe.

Using a colour code, the author groups the different roots:

  • Purple: from Proto-Indo-European bews (sediment, yeast).
  • Yellow: from Proto-Indo-European helu (bitter)
  • Red: possibly from Proto-Indo-European griot (barley) and jur (liquid).
  • Green: from Proto-Indo-European peh (to drink)
  • Orange: from Proto-Indo-European kherh (to mix, to cook)

Basque and Magyar, among others, stand out for having a unique etymology for the word beer.
