Linguistic map of soup in Europe (2023)

This map, published by Mapologies in 2023, shows how to say 'soup' in the different languages spoken in Europe.

Using a colour code, the author groups the different roots:

  • In yellow, from the Proto-Germanic root supposed.
  • Purple, from the Persian root شوربا o šōrbā.
  • In light green, from the Proto-Slavic root juxa.
  • In dark green, from the West Proto-Slavic root polévat.
  • In turquoise, from the Latin root minister.

In orange, languages that do not fall within these groups appear and have a completely different etymology for the word soup.
