This map, created by Reddit user Bezbojnicul, shows how to say 'cucumber' in the different languages spoken in Europe. The colour coding groups the different roots:

  • Purple: possibly from medieval Greek angourioun.
  • Yellow: from Latin cucumerem.
  • Light green: from Bulgarian krástavica.
  • Dark green: from Persian xiyär.
  • Orange: from the diminutive of the Latin pepo.
  • Red: from French gherkin.
  • Blue: from Latin citrium.
  • Fuchsia: from Middle Persian vätrang.
  • Dark pink: from Scottish Gaelic earth null.

German stands out for having words with two different roots, which is why it appears in yellow with purple dots.
