Map of the rebellion, the American Civil War (1864)

This map, intended for propaganda purposes, was published by the New York newspaper Harper's Weekly on 19 March 1864 with the full title “Map of the rebellion, as it was in 1861 and as it is in 1864”(Map of the rebellion, how it was in 1861 and how it is in 1864).

The map refers to the advance of Union troops against Confederate forces during the American Civil War, and is included in an article covering the Lincoln administration's efforts to quell the rebellion of the southern states.

Both the map and the article emphasise the milestone that was achieved in dividing the Confederate states into two sections, shown in dark colour. To the west, much of Texas with the western part of Louisiana. To the east, the states of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. The lighter colour represents the entire territory that the Confederate states had at the beginning of the war in 1861.
