The Peloponnesian War (431–404 BC)

This map, published by Evonne Stella De Roza For World History Encyclopedia, it represents the main events of the Peloponnesian War.

The Peloponnesian War was a conflict between the Peloponnesian League, led by Sparta, and the Delian League, led by Athens, which took place during the second half of the 5th century BC. Tension between the two cities had intensified in previous decades, partly because of their very different political and governmental systems.

On this map, Evonne Stella De Roza details the main battles and campaigns that took place during the 27 years of conflict (although there were some periods of peace). The map also uses colours to represent the different sides:

  • In blue, the territory occupied by Athens and its allies in the Delian League.
  • In red, the territory occupied by Sparta and its allies in the Peloponnesian League.
  • In orange, the territories of the allies that Sparta won during the war.
  • In grey, the city-states that remained neutral.
  • In light green, Sicily, where Athens had to send forces in the middle of the conflict to defend an ally.
  • In dark green, the territories occupied by the Persians.
