This comprehensive infographic, created by Christian Schlippes and Babette Ackermann-Reiche for the Berliner Morgenpost, was published in 2020 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Berlin.
The central part of the map represents the centre of Berlin, and the buildings are coloured according to their condition at the end of the war:
- In yellow, all the buildings that were in a state of total ruin.
- In orange, those buildings that were damaged but could be rebuilt.
- In grey, the areas that, although they may have been slightly damaged, could continue to be used as normal.
To understand the map, it is important to note that all streets and parks are also coloured dark. In fact, the entire centre of Berlin is occupied by the large Tiergarten park, which is why no buildings were seriously damaged during the war. With this in mind, it is understandable that Berlin was almost completely destroyed after the Second World War as a result of 363 Allied bombing raids.
