This map was created by Colombian cartographers Manuel María Paz and Manuel Ponce de León in 1864 and published in 1865 in the Atlas of the United States of Colombia. The map depicts the state of Santander during the period of the United States of Colombia and before the territorial reform that divided Colombia into departments in 1905.
The former state of Santander was bordered to the east by the state of Bolívar, the state of Antioquia and the state of Magdalena, to the northwest by Venezuela, and to the south by the state of Boyacá. The capital was located in the city of El Socorro, although on this map it is marked as Bucaramanga, which was only the capital until 1861.
