This map appears in a book published in 1883 by Ricardo S. Pereira on the United States of Colombia. The map was printed by the French publisher Georges Erhard Schieble.
The United States of Colombia was a federal state that existed between 1861 and 1886. It was the successor to Gran Colombia and comprised the present-day countries of Panama and Colombia, as well as a territory that currently belongs to Peru and Brazil.
The United States of Colombia was composed of the following nine federal states:
- Antioquia, with its capital in Medellín (although on this map it is marked as Santa Fe de Antioquia).
- Bolívar, with its capital in Cartagena de Indias.
- Boyacá, with its capital in Tunja.
- Cauca, with its capital in Popayán.
- Cundinamarca, with its head office in Bogotá.
- Magdalena, with its capital in Santa Marta.
- Panama, with its head office in Panama.
- Santander, with its capital in El Socorro (although on this map it is marked as Bucaramanga, which was only the capital until 1861).
- Tolima, with its capital in Ibagué (although on this map it is marked as Neiva, which was only the capital until 1870).
Following the Colombian civil war of 1884–1885, the Conservative Party established a centralist republic that brought an end to the United States of Colombia.
