Linguistic map of the carrot (2024)

This map, published by Mapologies in 2024, shows how to say carrot in the different languages spoken in Europe.

Using a colour code, the author groups the different roots. The main ones are as follows:

  • Dotted orange, from ancient Greek karōton.
  • Orange, from ancient Greek wild grapevine, through Andalusian Arabic.
  • Dark green, from Proto-Slavic mъrky.
  • Green, from Proto-Germanic murhǭ.
  • Yellow groups together words whose original meaning is yellow root: from Old Norse. carrot or Hungarian sárgarépa.
