Linguistic map of garlic (2024)

This map, published by Mapologies in 2024, shows how to say garlic in the different languages spoken in Europe.

Using a colour code, the author groups the different roots. The main ones are as follows:

  • Proto-Germanic, reddish colours laukaz.
  • Yellow, from Prototurkic sarïmsak.
  • Green, from Latin ālium.
  • Bottle green, from Proto-Slavic *česnъkъ.

As a curious fact, the Proto-Germanic root laukaz is also the origin of the word leek in many of these languages.
