Linguistic map of the camel (2022)

This map, published by Reddit user LlST- in 2022, shows the origin and evolution of the word camel in the languages of the Old World.

Fundamentally, there are four origins for this word, which spread throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa over the millennia. For each of the colours, the author establishes a colour and a line that traces the evolution and borrowing of this word between languages:

  • Gamal, in red, descended from the original Semitic word.
  • Úštras, in gold, descended from the original Indo-Iranian word.
  • Tebe, in blue, descended from the original Turkic word.
  • Lakda, in green, derived from the original Chinese word.
