This map, created by Álvaro Merino for the website The World Order, shows the two major sea routes for sailing from the Sea of Japan to Europe's main port, Rotterdam.
The Northern Sea Route is a passage that runs along the Arctic coast of Russia. This route has historically been impassable without the use of icebreakers, until 2017 when a Russian ship managed to navigate it. Since then, the number of ships that have followed this route to transport materials between Europe and Asia has increased, reaching 85 merchant ships in 2021.
This route is of great economic interest, as it reduces the time and fuel needed to travel from major ports such as Vladivostok, Tokyo or Dalian to major European ports. The map shows these differences, which range from savings of 25% to 40% in time and cost.
