Indigenous languages of the Arctic (2019)

This map was published in 2019 by the Arctic Council Secretariat (ACS) as part of a project to raise the profile of the region's peoples.

This map shows the distribution of indigenous languages in the various populated regions of the Arctic Circle. Across these latitudes, there are five major language families:

  • Yellow: Uralic languages (which also include Finnish and Magyar)
  • Brown: Altaic languages (which also includes Turkish)
  • Green: Paleosiberian or Paleoasiatic languages
  • Blue: Inuit-Yupik-Aleut languages
  • Purple: Na-Dene languages (which also includes Navajo).

In addition, the map also shows other isolated languages such as Ket, Nivechi, Haida, Yucaghir languages, and Tsimshian languages.

In most of these regions, these languages have become minority languages, with the official languages of the countries in which each region is located prevailing.
