This map was created in 1910 by American designer Charles A. de Lisle Holland.
This is a promotional postcard for the 1915 San Francisco World's Fair. The fair was intended to celebrate San Francisco's recovery from the 1915 earthquake, as well as the construction of the Panama Canal, which finally established a simple route for sailing between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
The iconic design of this map shows two women facing each other, about to kiss, separated only by the Isthmus of Panama. It was at this very spot that the Panama Canal was being built at the time, with construction completed in 1914, one year before the exhibition.
On this other map You can explore the details and complexity behind the Panama Canal.
