This map, created by Thoroe for Wikimedia Commons, it depicts the complexity of the Panama Canal in great detail. The map was originally created in German in 2012 and translated into Spanish a year later by the same author.
Construction of the Panama Canal began in May 1904, one year after Panama's independence, and was completed in 1914. This project, carried out by the United States, resumed the unfinished project that France had begun in the late 19th century. The new route significantly accelerated the transport of goods between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans without having to circumnavigate South America via Cape Horn.
The map shows the 16 sections into which the 82 kilometres of the canal are divided. At the bottom, there is also a detailed map of the canal's terrain and altitude, as well as the locks at both ends for adjusting the height along the route.
