Railway lines in Uruguay and neighbouring regions (1910)

This map was published by Argentine cartographer Aquiles Bemporat in 1910.

The map shows the entire railway network that existed in 1910 in Uruguay and neighbouring regions, including north-eastern Argentina, southern Paraguay and Rio Grande do Sul, the neighbouring state of Brazil. It shows the extensive network that was used to transport goods and passengers throughout the region, although none of the lines crossed national borders.

Of all the railway lines, marked in red, one line stands out in green, connecting the port of Coronilla in south-eastern Uruguay with the town of Santa Rosa in the north-west. This line was planned in 1910 and promoted by the Minister of Development with US funding. The idea was to connect the interior of the country and, at the same time, link up with the Brazilian network in Cuareim and the Argentine network in Monte Caseros. The project was never realised.
