The state of democracy in the world (2023)

This map, created by Joyce Ma for the website Visual Capitalist, represents the state of democracy in the world, according to the Democracy Index (Democracy Index) published in 2022 by the Economist Intelligence Unit, part of The Economist Group.

The Democracy Index is calculated based on 60 indicators grouped into five categories:

  • Electoral process and pluralism.
  • Political culture.
  • Political participation.
  • Functioning of the government.
  • Civil liberties.

In this way, each country is assigned an overall score, based on which it is assigned a democratic status:

  • Total democracy (8–10), in blue.
  • Flawed democracy (6–8), in light green.
  • Hybrid regime (4–6), in yellow.
  • Authoritarian regime (0–4), in orange and red.

At the top of the list are Norway (9.81), New Zealand (9.61), Iceland (9.52), Sweden (9.39) and Finland (9.29). At the opposite end of the scale are Afghanistan (0.32), Myanmar (0.74), North Korea (1.08), the Central African Republic (1.35) and Syria (1.43). It is curious to note the large number of Western democracies that the report ranks below 8, such as the United States, Italy, Portugal and Poland.
