Mexico Peace Index (2023)

This map, published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), is part of the Mexico Peace Index 2023 report, which analyses the development of violence and peace in the country. The report uses data from 2022.

On the map, each of Mexico's 31 states is assigned a colour based on its specific index:

  • Dark green, The most peaceful states: Yucatán, Tlaxcala, Chiapas, Tamaulipas, and Nayarit.
  • Light green, peaceful states: Hidalgo, Coahuila, Tabasco, Campeche, Durango, Aguascalientes, Veracruz, and Puebla.
  • Yellow, states in the middle: Sinaloa, Oaxaca, Querétaro, Mexico City, Jalisco, Baja California Sur, and San Luis Potosí.
  • Orange, Violent states: Guerrero, Michoacán, State of Mexico, Quintana Roo, Chihuahua, Nuevo León, and Sonora.
  • Red, The most violent states: Morelos, Guanajuato, Baja California, Zacatecas, and Colima.

The methodology is based on five parameters, with each state being scored from 1 to 5, where 1 is the value assigned to a high peace index. These are: homicides, violent crimes, crimes committed with firearms, organised crime offences, and imprisonment without sentence.

According to the report, Mexico has improved its peace indices for the second consecutive year, following a significant decline between 2015 and 2019. This improvement is driven by a 7.91% decrease in homicides in the country, the largest decline since 2015.
