This map, created by Landgeist In 2023, the Human Development Index (HDI) for each region of North America, according to data published by Global Data Lab in 2021.
The HDI is an index calculated by the United Nations since 1990, taking life expectancy, education levels and gross national income per capita as reference variables. Each of these three variables takes a value between 0 and 1, with the aim of making them globally comparable. These three values are used to calculate the geometric mean that represents the HDI, a number between 0 and 1, with a higher value the closer it is to 1.
The author uses a colour palette ranging from dark red to dark blue, including yellow, to illustrate the Human Development Index for each subdivision of the continent. At the top end of the scale are regions in Canada, the United States, Panama, Costa Rica and Saint Kitts and Nevis. At the opposite end are regions in Haiti, Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala.
