Asia Human Development Index (2022)

This map, created by Landgeist in 2022, shows the human development index (HDI) in each region of Asia, according to data released by Global Data Lab in 2019.

The HDI is an index calculated by the United Nations since 1990, taking life expectancy, education levels and gross national income per capita as reference variables. Each of these three variables takes a value between 0 and 1, with the aim of making them globally comparable. These three values are used to calculate the geometric mean that represents the HDI, a number between 0 and 1, with a higher value the closer it is to 1.

The author uses a range of colours from dark red through yellow to dark blue to show the human development index in each subdivision of the continent. At the high end are Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Macau, Israel and regions of Japan and South Korea. At the opposite extreme are regions of Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Syria.
