Life expectancy worldwide (2021)

This map, published by Our World in Data, shows life expectancy in different countries around the world. Information from various sources was taken into account in its creation, although primarily that provided by the United Nations.

It is easy to see that the lowest life expectancy is found in Central Africa, which includes four of the five countries with the lowest life expectancy: Chad (52.5), Nigeria (52.7), Central African Republic (53.9) and South Sudan (55).

At the opposite end of the spectrum are several countries in Europe, Asia and Oceania:

  • Monaco (85.9)
  • Japan (84.8)
  • Australia (84.5)
  • Switzerland (84.0)
  • Malta (83.8)
  • South Korea (83.7)
  • Liechtenstein (83.3)
  • Norway (83.2)
  • Spain (83.0)
  • Sweden (83.0)

In addition to regional differences, life expectancy still varies greatly between men and women. Although global average life expectancy stands at 71 years, this figure drops to 68.4 for men and rises to 73.8 for women.
