This map, published by The Independent in 2006, represents the world's main demographic data.
The infographic, which uses an equivalent area projection, displays multiple data points, mainly economic and demographic, from around the world in 2006. The different colours show the continents according to the Anglo-Saxon division.
The central section shows the world population pyramid, while the lower section includes the population pyramid for each of the continents. These show how Africa was the continent with the greatest growth potential in 2006, due to its high number of children, while Europe was already struggling to meet the replacement rate. The circles are used to mark the world's most populous cities: red (+20 million), orange (+15 million) and yellow (+10 million).
The top right-hand corner also includes some data on the countries and regions with the highest GDP per capita, with Bermuda at the top of the list, and the lowest, with East Timor at the bottom. The top left-hand corner includes generic global data such as total population, fertility rate, life expectancy, Internet users and literacy rate.
