Map of the city of Monterrey (1791)

This map of the city of Monterrey was published in 1791.

At that time, Mexico was not yet independent and Monterrey had fewer than 10,000 inhabitants. Its entire economy was centred on agriculture and livestock, and it would be many decades before industrial development and the boom reached the city.

The map, by an unknown author, is oriented with south at the top and shows the urban layout of the city at that time. Points of interest are marked on the map with different letters, which are listed in the legend. In 1791, Monterrey was still limited in size by the Santa Catarina River to the south and multiple streams to the north.

It is one of the oldest surviving maps of Monterrey.
