The Shadow of the American Pope (1894)

This map was drawn by Udo Keppler for Puck magazine in 1894. It was published as a strong criticism of the creation of the position of delegate of the Catholic Church in the United States.

The map shows a caricature of Francesco Satolli, the first American cardinal, standing on top of a building in Washington. His shadow stretches across the United States, covering major cities such as Memphis, St. Louis, New Orleans and Denver. The shadow also has his arms deliberately outstretched, reaching Florida with his left arm and California with his right.

The main concern of the author of this map, and of many critics of the Catholic Church, was its influence on public schools. That is why many of the cities have public schools highlighted. The map was accompanied by an editorial that openly criticised Satolli and claimed that his presence made it more difficult than ever to be a good Catholic and a good American at the same time.
