This physical map of Iceland was created by Icelandic cartographer Samúel Eggertsson in 1928.
The map was created to be hung in Icelandic schools and teach pupils about the country's geography. As with other physical maps, the intense red colours represent the highest regions, while green shows the areas below 200 metres.
As this is a map of Iceland, the common features of the country are particularly important. Permanent glaciers are shown in white, notably Vatnajökull, which covers more than 71% of the island's area. Small circles indicate large areas of lava fields.
Although primarily a physical map, the map also incorporates the location of the island's lighthouses, bridges, and even churches, which are marked by crosses throughout the map.
