This map was published by Victor Levasseur in 1856. It is part of the Illustrated National Atlas of the 86 Departments and Possessions of France (Illustrated national atlas of the 86 departments and possessions of France).
The map shows the department of Corsica, which comprised the entire island of Corsica. Before 1812, the island was divided into two departments, Golo and Liamone, and the division was re-established in 1976, with the departments of Haute-Corse and Corse-du-Sud.
The representation of the island is accompanied by several illustrations, which are repeated on all the maps in the atlas. The two illustrations at the top show Napoleon Bonaparte, leader and emperor of France between 1799 and 1815. The one at the bottom right shows Pasquale Paoli, considered by Corsican nationalism to be the father of the nation. Finally, at the bottom left, you can see the region's most important commercial products.
The map shows the subdivision of the department into districts. Existing roads, rivers and major cities are also shown. Statistical information about the territory, illustrations and the history of the department are shown on the sides.
