Spanish exploration and conquest of North America (2022)

This map, published by Simeon Netchev for World History Encyclopedia, shows the expeditions and conquests of the Spanish Empire in North America throughout the 16th century.

In yellow, the entire territory claimed by the Spanish in 1550 is shown, and the yellow line marks the extent of the Viceroyalty of New Spain at the end of the 16th century.

In addition, the author also includes the most important expeditions carried out on this continent:

  • In blue, Juan Ponce de León (1513)
  • In pink, Alonso Álvarez de Pineda and Pánfilo de Narváez (1519)
  • In brown, Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca (1526–1536)
  • In yellow, Francisco de Ulloa for Cortés (1539–1540)
  • In red, Hernando de Soto (1539–1544)
  • In orange, Francisco Vázquez de Coronado (1540–1542)
  • In purple, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo (1542–1543)
  • In olive green (dotted), Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar (1511–1515)
  • In dark blue (dotted), Francisco Hernández de Córdoba (1517)
  • In light green (dotted), Juan de Grijalva (1518)
  • In purple (dotted), Pedro de Alvarado (1522–1524)
  • In light red (dotted), Hernán Cortés in the conquest of Mexico (1518–1522)
  • In dark red (dotted), Hernán Cortés in Baja California (1532–1535)

A brown line also shows the extent of the Aztec Empire before the arrival of Cortés in 1519.
