When is Christmas officially celebrated (2023)?

This map, created by Álvaro Merino for El Orden Mundial in 2023, shows when Christmas is celebrated in each country around the world.

Christmas is one of the most widespread holidays in the world, thanks to the reach of the different branches of Christianity. Despite this, there are notable variations between the different countries where it is celebrated. This map shows in detail which countries celebrate Christmas and on which day:

  • In green, 25 December, the day according to Catholic tradition.
  • In light green, 6 January, the day according to Armenian tradition.
  • In dark green, 7 January, the day according to Russian Orthodox tradition, as it uses the Julian calendar instead of the Gregorian calendar.
  • In dark green and yellow, on 25 December and 6 January. This only applies to Lebanon, where Maronites and Armenians celebrate on different days.
  • In dark green and light green, on 25 December and 7 January, in countries where Orthodox and Catholic traditions are mixed.
  • In orange, all countries where there is no public holiday on Christmas Day.
  • In red, all countries where Christmas celebrations are prohibited.

Uruguay is often noted for being a historically Christian country that does not celebrate Christmas. This is due to the separation of church and state, which led to Family Day being celebrated on 25 December instead of Christmas Day.
