The Colorado River rises on the eastern slopes of the Andes, at the confluence of the Grande and Barrancas rivers, and flows south-eastwards until it empties into the Atlantic Ocean south of Bahía Blanca, after a course of some 1,000 kilometres. For much of this journey, it forms the boundary between the provinces of Mendoza and Neuquén initially, and between La Pampa and Río Negro subsequently. 300 kilometres from its mouth, it is joined by the Desaguadero River, also known as the Salado River as it flows through the province of La Pampa.
