The Mekong River is the most important river in Southeast Asia. From its source in the Tibetan plateau to its mouth in the East China Sea, it covers a distance of 4,880 kilometres. Its hydrographic basin covers a total of 810,000 square kilometres. Along its course, it passes through several major cities, such as Vientiane, the capital of Laos, and Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.
