Extent of Arctic Ocean sea ice (1980–2020)

This map, published by the Encyclopaedia Britannica, shows the retreat of Arctic sea ice between its minimum extent in 1980 and subsequently in 2020.

Due to polar warming, the Arctic Ocean has seen its sea ice (layer of ice covering the sea) recede from 1980 (in white) to 2020 (in purple).

This retreat has allowed a new shipping route to be opened in northern Russia since 2017, as can be seen. on this other map.
