Map of Santiago, Chile (1834)

This map of Santiago de Chile was published by José Javier Guzmán y Lecaros in his book on the history of Chile, published in 1834 under the title “The Chilean educated in the topographical, civil and political history of his country”This hand-drawn copy of the map is kept at the National Library of Chile.

The map shows the entire old part of the city, with the Mapocho River crossing the northern part and the ravine to the south, now converted into Avenida del Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins.

The author describes in detail the three main squares of Santiago, and lists twenty-three buildings that were characteristic of the city at the time, mainly the cathedral, churches, monasteries and convents.
