This infographic, created by Anders Kvernberg in 2016, shows a comparison of the largest glaciers on the planet to scale.
The map shows the ten largest glaciers in the world in terms of area, as well as their location:
- Antarctic ice sheet: 13,800,000 square kilometres in size.
- Greenland ice sheet: 1,726,000 square kilometres in size.
- Northern Ice Field, on Ellesmere Island, Canada: 24,400 square kilometres in size.
- Agassiz Ice Shelf, Ellesmere Island, Canada: 21,500 square kilometres in size.
- Prince of Wales Ice Field, on Ellesmere Island, Canada: 20,700 square kilometres in size.
- Ice cap on Severny Island, Russia: 20,500 square kilometres in size.
- Southern Ice Field, in Patagonia, Chile and Argentina: 16,800 square kilometres in size.
- Austfonna ice field, in Svalbard, Norway: 8,492 square kilometres in size.
- Vatnajökull Glacier, Iceland: 8,100 square kilometres in size.
- Manson Ice Field (incorrectly labelled McGill on the map), on Ellesmere Island, Canada: 7,250 square kilometres in size.
In addition to the well-known cases of Antarctica and Greenland, the amount of ice present on Ellesmere Island in Canada is striking, as it is home to three of the five largest glaciers on the planet.
