The great colonial empires in scale (1800)

This map, created by Anders Kvernberg in 2017, represents the scale of the great European colonial empires in 1800.

All metropolises and colonial territories are represented at an equivalent size and with the following colour code:

• Spanish Colonial Empire: Yellow.
• Portuguese Colonial Empire: Green.
• British Colonial Empire: Red.
• Danish Colonial Empire: Dark red.
• Dutch Colonial Empire: Orange.
• French Colonial Empire: Blue.

This should not be confused with a map showing the maximum extent of all these empires, as some greatly increased their possessions throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, such as France and the United Kingdom.
