Spain's challenge to Labour (1936)

This illustration appeared on the cover of a pamphlet published by English journalist H.N. Brailsford in 1936. To accompany it, Brailsford used a map provided by the Daily Herald depicting the situation of the Spanish Civil War. It shows the advance of the fascist forces, led by Franco (in grey), against the democratically elected government (in white).

The British government had opted for a neutral position on the war in Spain, and Bailsford therefore asked the British Labour Party to intervene on behalf of the Republican government before the challenge, in the words of the brochure itself.
