Regions with the fewest young people in the European Union (2023)

This map, created by Alberto Hernández and published in the newspaper El Mundo, represents the regions with the fewest young people in the European Union.

The map subdivides the European Union into its 1,166 regions. NUTS-3 (provinces in Spain, departments in France, districts in Germany, etc.) and highlights in red the 72 regions where the number of young people under the age of 20 does not exceed 16.1% of the total population.

Visually, five major blocks can be identified across the European Union:

  • North-western Iberia, including part of Portugal and Spain
  • Northern Italy.
  • The island of Sardinia, in Italy.
  • East Germany.
  • Western Canary Islands.

The two regions with the lowest percentages are in Spain: Zamora (13.1%) and Ourense (13.2%).
