This map, created by the illustrator Jakub Marian, shows the most commonly taught foreign language in secondary education in each European Union country, according to Eurostat data from 2016.
The map excludes English, as it was the most widely studied foreign language in all countries except Ireland and the United Kingdom (where it is the main language) and Luxembourg, where all students are required to study French and German in secondary education.
The map uses different colours for each language:
- French: red
- German: brown
- Spanish: yellow
- Russian: blue
- Swedish: light green
- Danish: dark green
French and German remain in the lead, with Russian declining and Spanish on the rise.
