This map, created by Sam Parker for the website Visual Capitalist, represents the ranking of countries according to their Global Innovation Index (Global Innovation Index), published annually by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
The Global Innovation Index is measured using five fundamental pillars: institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, market sophistication, and business sophistication.
The map uses a colour system to differentiate between four main ranks:
- Yellow/Light green: higher indices, above 60.
- Green: indices between 40 and 60.
- Turquoise: indices between 30 and 40.
- Blue: indices below 30.
At the top of the table, as shown in the illustration, are (in this order): Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and South Korea. Spanish-speaking countries are further down the table, with the following having the highest index: Spain (29th), Chile (52nd), Mexico (58th), Uruguay (63rd), Colombia (66th), Argentina (73rd), Costa Rica (74th) and Peru (76th).
