Map of urban areas in Spain (2021)

This map is part of the Statistical Atlas of Urban Areas, published in 2022 by the Spanish Ministry of Transport.

The map shows the 86 urban areas currently defined in Spain, showing their distribution and territorial extent. In addition, they are all coloured according to the growth (or decline) in population in these areas between 2020 and 2021:

  • Those that lost population are shown in blue, with the intensity of the blue indicating the extent of the loss.
  • Those that gained population are shown in orange, with the intensity of the orange colour indicating the extent of the increase.

At a glance, it can be seen that the fastest-growing urban areas are mainly those on the Mediterranean coast, especially those between Gandía and the Bay of Algeciras. Elsewhere on the peninsula, Toledo and Guadalajara also saw their populations grow, partly due to the influence of Madrid, as did Tarragona-Reus and Santiago de Compostela.
