Map of the death penalty (2021)

This map is part of the report published by Amnesty International in May 2022 on the situation of the death penalty and executions in the world.

The map shows in yellow all countries where at least one person was executed in 2020. There is a great lack of transparency in most countries that still retain the death penalty, but China remains in the lead with several thousand executed in 2021, followed by Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Syria.

The United States remains the only Western country where the death penalty is still in force, with 11 executions in 2021, the lowest number since 1988.
