Citizenship laws around the world (2021)

This map, created by Álvaro Merino for El Orden Mundial in 2021, shows how citizenship is obtained at birth in every country in the world.

Different countries around the world apply different laws to grant citizenship to newborns, based on different legal criteria:

  • jus soli (in yellow): In these countries, the mere fact of being born there guarantees citizenship of that country.
  • jus sanguinis, child of a citizen (in green): Children of citizens of these countries automatically obtain citizenship, regardless of their place of birth.
  • jus sanguinis, child of a resident (in blue): Children of residents in these countries automatically obtain citizenship, even if their parents are not citizens.
  • Others (in orange): This colour includes countries with other more complex criteria, such as Uganda or Papua New Guinea, where you can also obtain citizenship at birth if your parents or grandparents belonged to one of the country's ethnic groups.

On the 2021 map, Liberia was marked in orange due to legislation in which gender issues were also relevant. This was eradicated following a reform in 2022.
