Change in life expectancy (1970–2010)

This map, published by the Washington Post in 2012, shows changes in life expectancy in different regions of the world, highlighting the countries where there has been the greatest increase and the greatest decline, as well as the reasons behind them:

  • Maldives (+28.4 years): improvements in health programmes.
  • Bangladesh (+24.1 years): improvements in health programmes.
  • Iran (+21.3 years): improvements in health programmes.
  • Belarus (-1.2 years): increase in alcohol consumption.
  • Lesotho (-5.5 years): increase in HIV.

All regions, overall, showed improvement between 1970 and 2010, mainly in South America and Central America (+14.3 years), Africa (+13.2 years) and Asia (+12.9 years).
