This map, published by The seventeenth in 2020, shows the monumental complex of the Pyramids of Giza (or Guiza), near Cairo, Egypt.
The pyramids are one of the most iconic legacies of Ancient Egypt. They were built as a final resting place for the pharaohs from 2630 BC onwards. Although more than a hundred pyramids are known to exist, the most popular and well-known are those of Cheops (Khufu), Khafre and Menkaure, erected on the Giza plateau.
This map shows these three pyramids, as well as all the other archaeological remains of this important necropolis. The largest pyramid in the complex, that of Cheops, has a base measuring 230 x 230 metres and reached a height of 150 metres, making it one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
Next to the pyramids are extensive fields of mastabas arranged in a grid pattern for officials and minor relatives of the pharaohs. The pyramid complex of Khafre, in particular, also contains the Great Sphinx, a mythical creature carved from limestone that stands beside the path leading to the entrance of the pyramid.
