Map of Cairo, by Piri Reis (1525)

This map of the city of Cairo was originally drawn by cartographer Piri Reis in 1521 as part of his navigation book, Kitab-ı Bahriye. After a few minor modifications, the final version was published in 1525 and presented as a gift to Suleiman, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. This copy is a later reproduction from the early 18th century, preserved at the Walters Art Museum in the United States.

As part of a navigation book, this map of Cairo places great importance on the Nile River, as well as the different types of ships that can sail on it, which are drawn on the sides. The map is oriented with the south at the top, showing the walled city of Cairo on its eastern side and the pyramids on its western side (in the upper right corner).
