This map was published by Liang Wanmei in 2023 as part of the initiative #30DayMapChallenge.
The illustration shows the distribution of giraffes in Africa. The different colours represent the different species. Some of these, in turn, are divided into several subspecies, which are distinguished, among other things, by the pattern on their fur. On the left-hand side you can see the identifying marks of the species:
- Blue: Giraffe, which is further subdivided into:
- Giraffe peralta (1)
- Giraffe antiquorum (2)
- Giraffe (3)
- Green: Giraffe (4)
- Purple: Giraffe tippelskirchi, which is further subdivided into:
- Giraffe tippelskirchi tippelskirchi (5)
- Giraffe tippelskirchi thornicrofti (6)
- Red: Giraffe giraffe, which is further subdivided into:
- Giraffe giraffe Angolan (7)
- Giraffe giraffe giraffe (8)
Until 2016, the giraffe was considered a single species with eight subspecies, but after several DNA analyses, it was determined that there were actually four distinct species with different subspecies.
